Bilas: Henderson, Finney get their shots

 ESPN.com

Editor's note: ESPN's Jay Bilas reacts to the hirings of David Henderson at Delaware and Shaun Finney at Tulane:

On Henderson
As the new head coach at Delaware, David Henderson will face a different, yet equal, set of expectations from those he experienced as an assistant at Duke. While the pressure at Duke came from a supposition that the Blue Devils would make the Final Four each year; the Blue Hens, as one of the top mid-major programs in the country, expect to represent the America East Conference in the NCAA Tournament each year. David has proven he is the kind of coach who can not only manage, but can thrive, with that kind of pressure and expectation.

As a coach David will demand his players give their all, but won't be screaming in their faces to ensure it. He's a quiet competitor who relates to his players and can motivate them in different ways. None of his players will outwork him, but David will never hold it over their heads. Players will want to play for David because they will recognize his effort.

As a player David Henderson was the toughest guy, mentally or physically, I ever played with. He was one of the unsung heroes on our team. He made huge shots and did a lot of dirty work. But because we had a couple of superstars, he never really got the due he deserved.

No one ever had any fun playing against David Henderson. We'll see if the coaches in the America East agree.

On Finney
As an assistant at Tulsa, Georgia and then Kentucky over the last eight years, Shawn Finney has been well-trained by Tubby Smith, one of the best coaches in America. He is extremely organized, has an impressive, quiet intensity, is focused on his team and is exceptionally loyal.

There are plenty of assistants who tend to neglect their current job because they are too busy looking for their next job. Shawn Finney was never like that at UK. He's always been focused on his job and firmly believes that the best way to put yourself in position for a step up is to do your current job. And, as Tubby's assistant, Finney always did his job.

It will be important for Finney to understand that, with Tulane, he's not inheriting a gold mine. The program will become whatever he makes it.
