Battier became more vocal last season and he's prepared to do it again to get on Carlos Boozer. Teammates, coaches and opposing players respect what Battier says and how he expresses himself. There is no better ambassador for the game than Shane.

Battier has the heart of a leader by returning to complete his degree and compete for a title. No one questions his desire or his work ethic. That should carry over and influence younger players like Nick Horvath and Casey Sanders on a Duke team needing depth.

Battier is looking more presidential than the choices facing the country Nov. 7. His leadership for the student basketball congress gave the basketball players a voice on NCAA issues. But that kind of maturity carries over to Duke, which can use his leadership.

Battier doesn't have a problem getting a jump shot off or posting up inside. Battier has increased his foot speed and doesn't lumber anymore. He's a quick study and learned how to blow by a defender to get to the basket.
