Murphy was the Big East POY in 1999-00.
Murphy looks like he would be a plodding center but don't be deceived. Murphy can get by a defender with a drive from the elbow of the free-throw line. He can also spin on a defender for a baseline layup or dunk. He's got the hops, too, to convert a dunk on the break.
NBA scouts love his hands. They're soft enough to loft 3s and hard enough to hold onto the ball when he's getting surrounded in the post. Murphy's passing continues to improve and he's creating even more shots for the guards by the attention he's receiving.
Murphy was smart to return for another season. He could have gone in the lottery, possibly top five. But he wasn't ready to dump his college years. He understands where he's at both on and off the court, and his limitations.
Murphy gets beat up in the post; clutched and grabbed and tugged on. Yet, he doesn't back down and seems to be hungrier when he gets the ball. Murphy wants to get the Irish back to the NCAA, regardless of who the coach is in South Bend.
