Altron Jackson and B.B. Waldon is the best 1-2 combination in the conference. Jackson may be the best athlete in the league -- he's just awesome. I don't know that there's a wing player I like better, not only in the conference but in the country. He's very athletic up and down the floor, defends well, passes well, he's strong inside and has a decent 15-foot jump shot. The only problem I have with Waldon is that sometimes his shot-selection is questionable. He also needs to stay out of coach Seth Greenberg's doghouse. One thing this club needs to improve is its free-throw shooting. But the Bulls have good athletes with size. This might finally be the year the Bulls get to the NCAA Tournament.
    Outlook
This needs to be the payoff year for Seth Greenberg, who has lifted South Florida up a level since he arrived in 1996, but has stalled short of an NCAA Tournament bid.

Now, with senior forwards Alton Jackson and B.B. Waldon back after combining to average 36 points and 12.1 rebounds, the Bulls could be primed for a breakthrough. They will be the ringleaders, both possessing inside-outside skills, the ability to get to the foul line (a combined 289 free-throw attempts last year for the two) and active hands in Greenberg's trapping half-court zone defenses.

Starting point guard Reggie Kohn and starting center Gerrick Morris both return as well to a program with four straight non-losing seasons but only one NIT game to show for it.

That veteran core might help improve South Florida's fortunes on the road. The Bulls are a classic uneven team depending on which color jersey they're wearing: 23-5 at home the past two seasons, 10-19 on the road.

What we like: In Jackson, Waldon and Kohn, South Florida returns three guys who averaged at least 28 minutes last season. They will have the ball in their hands the majority of the time on offense and will make most of the key on-court decisions. Not many teams will have a pair of forwards that match up to Jackson and Waldon.

What we don't like: The Bulls shot an abysmal 60.2 percent from the foul line last year, including Waldon's unsatisfactory 51 percent on 151 attempts. That might be one reason why they were just 2-6 in games decided by eight points or less.

The bottom line: Non-conference opportunities against California, Florida, Syracuse and Florida State will be huge for a team trying to stack up some quality wins for Selection Sunday. Break even in those games and make a push in the league, and South Florida might snag its third NCAA Tournament bid in school history.
