BOX SCORE
WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Idrees Bashir ran back an interception 100 yards _ matching the longest in the 76-year history of Michie Stadium _ as Memphis beat Army 26-16 Saturday in a Conference USA game. With Army trailing 20-14 and driving in the fourth quarter, Bashir was 2 yards deep in the end zone when he stepped in front of a Curtis Zervic pass intended for Brian Bowdish and raced up the right side of the field, matching the record set by Ed Givens against Lafayette in 1991. It was one of three interceptions against Zervic, a third-string quarterback. He relieved Joe Gerena in the first quarter after Gerena hurt his right _ throwing _ shoulder. Zervic ended the day 28-for-38 for 246 yards. Another sub, Memphis starting quarterback Neil Suber was 20-for-31 for 187 yards and one touchdown. With the score tied at 14 midway through the fourth quarter, Suber hit Jeremiah Bonds for a 31-yard score that put Memphis (3-1, 1-0) ahead. Army, 0-4 for the first time since going 0-10 in 1973, had tied the score when Jason Milton popped Wade Smith on the opening kickoff of the second half, and Anthony Miller picked up the ball and ran 23 yards for a touchdown. A stingy Memphis defense, two big plays and penalties were the story of the first half. Twice, Army marched the ball down the field and failed on fourth-and-goal. The first time was near the end of the first quarter when Zervic lined up from the 2-yard-line and tried to draw the Tigers offsides. Brendan Mullen then tried for a 24-yard field goal and was wide left. On Army's next possession, set up by Randy Mitchell's block of a Ben Graves punt, the Black Knights (0-3 conference) moved 29 yards to the Memphis 1. This time, Army went for it on fourth down but linebacker Derrick Ballard and defensive end Andre Arnold stuffed Zervic's plunge. Army finally broke through on special teams with 9:53 left in the first half, getting a 72-yard punt return up the left sideline from Omari Thompson, who lunged into the end zone and knocked over the pylon as he tumbled out of bounds. Memphis scored on its first possession. Taking over at their 10-yard line, they took six plays to score, with Sugar Sanders running 62 yards for a touchdown. Sanders left the game in the second quarter with 73 yards on seven carries after again spraining his right ankle, an injury that has limited him all season. Darche Epting took over the rushing load, gaining 66 yards on 19 carries and scoring once for Memphis. After Thompson's return evened the score, Memphis chewed 6:50 off the clock, going 78 yards in 15 plays and scoring when Epting scampered in untouched on a fourth-and-goal from the 1.
