RECAP | BOX SCORE

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ Mike McMahon passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as Rutgers beat winless Navy 28-21 on Saturday.

McMahon completed 18 of 33 passes for 304 yards, including the two longest TD plays of the year for the Scarlet Knights (3-4).

The senior threw scoring passes of 45 yards to Antoine Lovelace in the second quarter, and 83 yards to Errol Johnson in the third. McMahon also ran 3 yards for a score in the fourth period.

Johnson caught eight passes for a career-best 178 yards.

The penalty-plagued Midshipmen (0-7) were flagged seven times for 63 yards and had an apparent interception return for a touchdown nullified by an illegal block. Starting quarterback Ed Malinowski fumbled three times, losing one.

Brian Broadwater sparked a stagnant Navy offense when he took over for Malinowski at the end of the first half, directing a 74-yard touchdown drive. But the Mids couldn't move the ball effectively again until the fourth quarter, when both quarterbacks appeared in a 14-play, 54-yard touchdown drive.

The Knights took a 14-7 lead with 13:18 to play in the second quarter, when Wes Lysack blocked Brian Williams' punt at the 12 and took the ball in for a touchdown.

Navy scored on its first possession on Malinowki's 5-yard run with 11:18 to play.

But Rutgers seized the momentum late in the first quarter after being pinned at its own 2 on a punt. The Knights swept downfield in just 1:17, tying the game at 7 on McMahon'45-yard touchdown pass to Lovelace on the first play of the second period.

Rutgers moved the ball easily in the seven-play drive. McMahon sandwiched a 25-yard pass to Johnson between runs of 9 and 11 yards by Dennis Thomas.

Broadwater relieved Malinowski with 4:02 left in the first half, directing the tying touchdown drive, which was capped by his 5-yard run with 35 seconds on the clock. He began the 10-play, 74-yard drive by hitting Williams with a 30-yard pass to put the ball in Rutgers territory.

Rutgers took a 21-14 lead with 7:36 left in the third quarter when McMahon hit Johnson on a quick sideline pass and Johnson raced 83 yards for the touchdown. The score came two plays after Navy was forced to punt when it failed to capitalize on an interception by Eric Severson.

Severson's apparent touchdown return was wiped out by a penalty, and the Mids were bogged down by a holding flag and an ineffective running game afterward.
