Arizona comes up short for third straight week

RECAP | BOX SCORE

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Washington Huskies had trouble focusing on Arizona and it showed.

Marques Tuiasosopo's 2-yard touchdown run with 1:10 left gave the Huskies (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) an emotional 35-32 victory Saturday.

Marques Tuiasosopo's 2-yard winning score was his second touchdown of the day -- the other was a 1-yard run in the first quarter.

The Huskies won with some of their attention focused on Curtis Williams. Williams injured his spinal cord last week against Stanford, and is hospitalized at the Stanford Medical Center.

"It was such an emotional week," coach Rick Neuheisel said. "It was difficult for the players to fly around with reckless abandon given the circumstances with Curtis."

A TV set was set up above Williams' bed in intensive care so Williams could watch the game.

"If nothing else, we were happy to keep him awake for the entire ball game," said Neuheisel, who flew down to Stanford Thursday night to visit Williams. "And a game ball is on its way to Curtis."

Williams' condition was on the hearts and minds of his teammates when they took the field against the Wildcats.

"It was a hard week," linebacker Derrell Daniels said. "Everyone was thinking about what happened to Curtis."

The Huskies (8-1, 5-1 Pac-10) drove 57 yards in 11 plays to pull out a victory in the fourth quarter for the second straight week. They won 31-28 in the final minute at Stanford.

"These guys are giving me gray hairs and I'm only 20 years old," said Willie Hurst, who scored on two touchdown runs for the Huskies in the fourth quarter.

Tuiasosopo drove Washington 80 yards in three plays in 36 seconds for its victory at Stanford.

"It's great to play with a group of guys who don't quit," Tuiasosopo said. "We pulled out another squeaker today."

Washington's Anthony Vontoure blocked a 51-yard field goal attempt by Sean Keel as time ran out.

Arizona (5-4, 3-3) lost a close game for the third week in a row. The Wildcats grabbed the lead at 32-28 on Leo Mills' 51-yard touchdown run with 4:48 on the clock.

"It was a heartbreaking loss," Arizona coach Dick Tomey said. "We just all feel terrible."

The Wildcats have lost games to Oregon, UCLA and Washington on consecutive weeks by a total of 10 points.

"It's not once, twice, but three losses in a row," Arizona quarterback Ortege Jenkins said. "It hurts bad."

Arizona led 16-10 at halftime when it held an 18-4 edge in first downs and a 22:49-7:11 advantage in time of possession.

"For some reason, they were able to control the line of scrimmage," Neuheisel said.

The Wildcats led 25-10 in the third quarter after a 60-yard punt return by Bobby Wade for a touchdown and a 38-yard field goal by Keel.

But the Huskies rallied for the next 18 points. John Anderson kicked a 38-yard field goal for Washington in the third quarter. Hurst scored on a 65-yard run on a pitchout from Tuiasosopo with 10:51 left and then put the Huskies ahead for the first time on a 23-yard run with 8:31 to go.

Neuheisel said Hurst's 65-yard TD run was the key play of the game as he was concerned.

"It's amazing how everybody comes to life when you go for a 65-yard touchdown," he said.

On Washington's winning TD drive, Tuiasosopo had a 25-yard completion to tight end Jerramy Stevens on a third-down play to give his team the ball at the Arizona 37. On a third-and-4 play from the Arizona 6, Hurst took a pitchout and ran 4 yards around left end for a first down.

"We just knew we had to win for Curtis," Stevens said. "I was praying as hard as I could that we would pull this one out for him."

Hurst led Washington's rushing attack with 116 yards and two TDs on eight carries, while Tuiasosopo completed 17 of 34 passes for 196 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Tuiasosopo had 53 yards on 12 carries.

Washington lost two fumbles, two by Tuiasosopo.

Mills rushed 29 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Jenkins was 13-for-33 for 208 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Jenkins gained 45 yards on 14 carries.
