STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Nate Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second overtime, and Ryan Hansen intercepted a pass to give Iowa a 26-23 victory over Penn State on Saturday.

Quarterback Rashard Casey gave Penn State a brief lead in the first overtime before throwing an interception in the second extra session.

Casey had a 6-yard touchdown run to give Penn State (4-6, 3-3 Big Ten) a 23-16 lead in the first overtime. Iowa (2-8, 2-4) answered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Ladell Betts.

It was the first time either team had played an overtime game.

Ryan Primanti, who made three field goals in regulation, had a chance to win on the last play of regulation, but his 56-yard field-goal attempt fell just short.

The loss keeps coach Joe Paterno two games behind Bear Bryant for major college victories. With 321 wins, Paterno is first among active coaches.

Kyle McCann threw 232 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Hawkeyes, and Betts had 25 carries for 101 yards.

Casey had a career day before the interception, setting personal bests with 27 completions on 51 attempts for 302 yards and one interception.

Kaeding, whose four field goals tied a school record, kicked a 43-yard field goal with 6:17 left in the game to give Iowa a 16-13 lead.

Primanti answered with a 28-yard field goal to tie the game 16-16 with 2:59 left.

Penn State tied it at 13 with 13:56 left in the game when John Gilmore caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Casey.

Primanti kicked a 32-yard field goal with 3:53 left in the third quarter to bring Penn State within 13-6.

Penn State didn't score until the final minute of the first half, when Primanti's 42-yard field goal with 38 seconds left closed the Iowa lead to 13-3.

Kyle McCann completed nine of his first 10 passes for 104 yards, finding Kahlil Hill in the end zone from 6 yards out in the first quarter to put Iowa up 7-0.

The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 10-0 with 11:08 left in the first half when Nate Kaeding kicked a 48-yard field goal, his longest of the season. Kaeding topped that with 1:38 left in the half, kicking a 49-yard field goal to put Iowa up 13-0.

Iowa has won two of its last three against Penn State. In the series, the home team has won just four of 15 games.

With the loss, Penn State is assured of missing a bowl game for the first time since going 5-6 in 1988.
