BOX SCORE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Travis Henry ran for 139 yards and three
touchdowns and set a school rushing record as Tennessee (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today) beat
Kentucky 59-20 on Saturday in his final game at Neyland Stadium.
Casey Clausen finished 19-of-24 for 362 yards and four touchdown
passes, and Tennessee (7-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) beat the
Wildcats for the 16th straight year.
| | | Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen was sacked seven times by the Tennessee defense Saturday. |
Kentucky (2-9, 0-8) has not beaten the Volunteers since a 17-12
win here in 1984 and has allowed Tennessee to score at least 56
points in the last five games.
Henry surpassed James Stewart's 2,890 career rushing yards to
become Tennessee's career rushing leader with 2,894 yards. Henry's
14-yard run in the fourth quarter gave him the record, and started
a celebration on the sidelines. Tennessee had to call a timeout as
the Jumbtron showed highlights of Henry's career.
That run led to Clausen's second TD pass to Cedrick Wilson -- an
18-yarder -- to put the Vols ahead 52-20 with 12:38 left in the game
and the exit of thousands of fans who had sat in the 33-degree damp
weather.
Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen, who played the second half
with a sprained ankle, broke three more NCAA season records for a
freshman. He had already set the season records for completions and
attempts, and broke the old records for total offense, offensive
plays and passing yards on Saturday.
He finished 24 of 46 with two interceptions and two touchdown
passes to Quentin McCord. The second TD, a 21-yarder, cut
Tennessee's lead to 45-20 with 14:30 to go in the game.
The Vols then scored on an 80-yard run by Travis Stephens,
Henry's backup, to go up 59-20 with 6:48 left.
Tennessee took a 38-13 halftime lead after Alex Walls kicked a
39-yard field to answer Kentucky's only touchdown of the first
half.
Lorenzen connected with McCord on a 36-yard touchdown play 51
seconds earlier that cut the lead to 35-13.
Lorenzen limped off the field after Tennessee's John Henderson
tackled him during the play, and team officials took him to the
locker room early.
The Vols came out in the second half and scored on their first
drive on Clausen's 33-yard touchdown pass to David Martin for a
45-13 lead.
Tennessee jumped out to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first
quarter on two of Henry's runs and a pass to Stallworth.
Henry, who had 95 rushing yards in the first quarter, ran all
three snaps in Tennessee's third possession and then busted through
Kentucky's defense for a 53-yard touchdown with 34 seconds to go in
the first quarter.
Henry scored on a 3-yard run, and Stallworth caught an 18-yard
touchdown pass from Clausen, who was intercepted once, for a 14-0
lead.
Kentucky scored two quick field goals -- one after Leonard Scott
fumbled on a kickoff return -- to cut Tennessee's lead to 21-6 in
the second quarter.
Wilson caught a pass from Clausen across the middle from the
Kentucky 31 and scored to put the Vols up 28-6 with 10:27 to go in
the second half.
Then Henry added another 2-yard touchdown on Tennessee's next
possession.
Former Tennessee coach Johnny Majors, who was fired and replaced
by Phillip Fulmer in 1992, returned to Neyland Stadium for the
first time. He was honored with his 1985, 1989 and 1990 SEC
championship teams before the game started.
