Kemoeatu, a three-year starter, to miss bowl

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah nose guard Ma'ake Kemoeatu is under suspension for the final game of his career after the NCAA ruled he improperly provided textbooks to his younger brother Tevita.

Kemoeatu, who has 30 tackles during his senior season, will miss next Tuesday's matchup with USC in the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl after Utah discovered the violation and reported it to the NCAA.

As a scholarship player, Kemoeatu gets textbooks at no charge, but the four-year starter also obtained three extra books for his brother, who as a walk-on is not allowed to receive such benefits. The Utes discovered the discrepancy when Kemoeatu turned in his books at semester's end last week.

Kemoeatu repaid the university for the books, but the NCAA requires a one-game suspension, and turned down Utah's appeal to permit Kemoeatu to play. Kemoeatu cannot practice with his teammates, dress for the game or be provided with meals or lodging.

Tevita Kemoeatu, a freshman defensive lineman, is red-shirting this season, so his suspension will be served in Utah's first game next year, against Utah State. Another brother, Chris, is a freshman offensive lineman.

The Las Vegas Bowl will be only the second game Ma'ake Kemoeatu has missed in his career. In the same game two seasons ago, the Kahuku, Hawaii, native blocked an extra point in Utah's 17-16 victory over Fresno State.
