Coaches steal the show last weekend

The first full weekend of games produced many memorable games as well as a special group of coaches that deserve a pat on the back.

  • BYU was behind 21-0 at halftime before LaVell Edwards led his team back. The Cougars got 35 points in the second half and beat Virginia. The fans had the pleasure of seeing two future college football hall of famers, Edwards and George Welsh, battle it out in a thrilling game.

South Carolina coach Lou Holtz, right, meets with New Mexico State coach Tony Samuel after winning his first game at the school, breaking a 21-game losing streak.
  • For the personal pains he's gone through and losing the 11 games last year, this South Carolina win was among the most meaningful in Lou Holtz's distinguished career.

  • All I can say is Holy Toledo!! Congrats to Gary Pinkel and the Rockets.

  • With all the distractions surrounding the Texas A&M game, Bob Davie and his staff did a tremendous job preparing the Irish and keeping the focus on the field.

  • Michigan QB coach Stan Parrish did a wonderful job preparing first time starter John Navarre. Navarre tied a school record with four TD passes; hit 15 of 19 with no INTs and 265 yds.

    A few other tidbits ...

  • I was wrong; I didn't think UCLA would outhit Alabama. They did, and that's why they won.

  • Physically this is the most under-manned Penn State team I've seen in 20 years. Now they will have a problem mentally because when players lose, they've got blame someone else. Mark it on your calendar.

  • Tulane, Memphis, West Carolina, Southwest Mousouri and UCLA all played teams in the SEC West last week. Guess which one of those teams won their game? Goes to show scheduling is very important in the opener.
