| GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida may have
solidified itself as Quarterback U. for another four years after locking
up an oral commitment from the South's top prep quarterback.
Brock Berlin, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian Academy, announced Sunday at his church that he had chosen Florida over Louisiana State, Georgia and Kentucky. He will enroll at Florida in January and participate in spring practice. All oral commitments are non-binding until national signing day on Feb. 5. "I have known since the summer that Florida was the place for me," Berlin said. "I camped there and I just loved it." Through seven games this season, Berlin completed 141-of-244 passes for 2,060 yards and had thrown 19 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He is 52-0 in his high school career. Berlin, who is considered by some to be the best prep quarterback in the nation, is 31 touchdown passes shy of the national high-school career record for touchdown passes. He threw 54 as a junior. His best game this season came against Shreveport Fair Park High, when he completed 7-of-11 passes for 148 yards and threw five touchdowns. That may not sound impressive at first, but it sounds better after taking into account that Berlin played only the first quarter and had an efficiency rating of 262.69 for the game. Berlin's mother, Nancy, said it was a certain former UF quarterback who swayed her son. "He fell in love with coach Spurrier," Nancy Berlin said. "He just thinks he can work well with him. They talk the same language. They see the same vision. Brock's very competitive, as is coach Spurrier."
