| ARLINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Oklahoma won the
weekend's biggest game but lost one first-place vote to No. 2
Miami in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' football poll, which
was released Sunday morning.
The Sooners (9-0), who rallied for a 35-31 victory over Texas
A&M on Saturday, also saw their lead over the Hurricanes (8-1)
reduced by five to a 66-point margin. They received a total of
1,473 points from a nationwide panel of 59 coaches.
Miami, a 35-7 winner over Pittsburgh, can clinch the Big East
Conference title and a spot in one of the Bowl Championship
Series games if it wins at Syracuse next weekend.
Despite the narrow loss to the Sooners, the Aggies (7-3) rose
one spot in the rankings to No. 23.
No. 22 Georgia Tech (7-2) and 25th-ranked Tennessee (6-3)
entered the poll this week, replacing Colorado State and South
Carolina.
The Yellow Jackets are ranked for the first time this season,
and Tennessee is back among the nation's elite after a
five-week absence. The Volunteers have been ranked as high as
ninth this season.
Florida State (10-1) and Florida (9-1), who are ranked third and
fourth, respectively, play each other Saturday. The Florida
schools are followed by a pair of Pac-10 Conference teams still
in the hunt for the Rose Bowl, Washington (9-1) and Oregon
(9-1).
Rounding out the top 10 is seventh-ranked Virginia Tech (9-1),
Oregon State (9-1), Kansas State (9-1) and Nebraska (8-2).
Purdue (7-3) took the week's biggest tumble, falling eight
notches to 17th after a 30-10 loss at Michigan State. Still,
the Boilermakers can clinch the Big Ten title with a victory
over Indiana on Saturday.
Nebraska fell five spots to 10th after its 29-28 loss at Kansas State on Saturday night.
Notre Dame (7-2) is ranked 11th and followed by Ohio State
(8-2), Mississippi State (7-2), Clemson (8-2), Texas (8-2) and
Texas Christian (8-1).
Auburn (8-2) beat long-time rival Georgia in overtime and leaped
four places to 19th, while the Bulldogs (6-3) fell eight spots
to No. 21.
Rounding out the poll is 18th-ranked Michigan (7-3), No. 20
Southern Mississippi (7-2) and 24th-ranked Northwestern (7-3). | ALSO SEE
