ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando police made two arrests on Thursday in connection with the shooting of Florida State football player Eric Powell, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday. Troy Davis, 23, and 43-year-old Ricky Mathis, both of Orlando, were charged with armed robbery and attempted felony murder. Both were scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday. Powell, a 21-year-old Orlando native, was shot at about 1:45 a.m. ET on Sunday outside the Lake Mann Apartments and had surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center to repair a damaged liver and diaphragm. He was moved out of the intensive-care unit Tuesday morning. Powell's mother, Sylvia, told the Sentinel on Thursday night that her son was feeling better. He was listed in stable condition. Detective Patrick Schneider, who is investigating the case, told the Sentinel that Powell had been visiting friends in Orlando and was told to meet several more friends near the Lake Mann Apartments early Sunday morning. "He was being set up to be robbed," Schneider told the Sentinel. "When he came back later, he came into an ambush." According to Schneider, Davis and Mathis confronted Powell and demanded his belongings at gunpoint. Powell turned and fled down the street, when he heard two gunshots and felt a bullet hit him in his back. Powell, a senior reserve defensive end, ran through the housing complex, scaled a fence and hid in some bushes, Schneider said. "Basically, his strength allowed him to escape," Schneider told the Sentinel. "Basically, his strength saved his life." Using his cellular phone, Powell called a friend, who picked him up and drove him to his mother's home a little more than a mile away. From there he was taken to the hospital. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said Wednesday that he expects Powell to miss the rest of the season. Last season, Powell played in 11 games and recorded 21 tackles. He had seven tackles through two games this season. Powell is just the most recent player to be lost for the season. Three other Seminoles, wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Robert Morgan and running back Davy Ford, all suffered season-ending knee injuries. Freshman Willie Reid is out with a broken fibula, and defensive end Travis Johnson is doubtful for Saturday's game against North Carolina. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
