Coaches return Miami to No. 1; FSU out

ESPN.com news services

Miami, one week after being replaced by Nebraska at No. 1, regained that ranking in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Sunday

The Hurricanes (9-0) and idle Cornhuskers (11-0) flip-flopped at 1-2 after Miami embarrassed No. 21 Syracuse 59-0 Saturday in the Orange Bowl the week after surviving an 18-7 scare at Boston College.

Miami received 33 of 60 first-place for 1,468 points, six more than Nebraska (25 first-place votes). Last week, Nebraska -- the top-ranked team in last week's Bowl Championship Series standings, hurdled the Hurricanes with 30 first-place votes and 1,469 points.

No. 3 Florida, defending national champion No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 BYU, and No. 9 Maryland held their rankings in this week's poll. Florida and BYU (11-0), the only other unbeaten Top 25 team, each received one first-place vote.

Illinois (9-1), still in the running for the Big Ten title, rounded out the top 10 by moving up three spots after Saturday's victory over Ohio State. The Illini replaced Washington State, a 26-14 loser to No. 12 Washington in the Apple Cup, fell to 16th.

Florida State fell to 6-4 with its latest loss, 37-13 to Florida, and tumbled out of the poll. The Seminoles also are expected to fall out of the Associated Press media poll, the first time that would happen since early in the 1989 season.

Michigan held at No. 11, with Washington, Stanford, Colorado, Virginia Tech, Washington State, Louisville, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Marshall completing the top 20.

Miami (6-0 Big East) secured at least a share of the conference title by pummeling Syracuse and virtually locked up a spot in a BCS game. If the Hurricanes are to reach the Rose Bowl, they'll have to at least beat remaining opponents Washington and Virginia Tech.

Florida's victory kept the Gators in the thick of the national-title picture -- although their loss to Auburn last month could still prove their undoing.

Syracuse, Fresno State, Georgia, Auburn and Arkansas rounded out the Top 25. Georgia and Arkansas were this week's newcomers, replacing Florida State and UCLA, which suffered its fourth straight loss 27-0 at Southern California.

The Bowl Championship Series standings, which had Nebraska first and Miami second last week, will be released Monday. The final BCS standings Dec. 9 determine which teams play for the national title in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 3.

The AP media poll and the coaches poll are part of the BCS formula, which also uses computer ratings and strength of schedule to come up with its top teams.
