Dockett: 'I didn't try to hurt the guy'

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State defensive tackle Darnell Dockett denied accusations Monday that he intentionally injured Florida running back Earnest Graham during the Seminoles' 37-13 loss to No. 3 Florida on Saturday night.

"There was nothing intentional," Dockett said. "Like my coach (Bobby Bowden) says, 'It's hard to twist somebody's knee.' I mean, twisting ankles, yeah, but twisting somebody's knee is something else."

He added: "I didn't try to hurt the guy. I wouldn't want anybody to hurt me. I hope the guy gets well."

Florida coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday that Graham, who left on crutches after Saturday's game, told him that a Seminoles defender might have injured his right knee by intentionally twisting it in a pileup Saturday.

Dockett is listed as the tackler on the play.

"It was an aggressive tackle, I pulled him down," Dockett said. "I didn't intentionally pull his leg or anything."

Graham had to be helped off the field after spraining his right knee. There are no replays that clearly show the end of the play where Graham injured the knee.

The injury could keep Graham out of Florida's Dec. 1 game against Tennessee and the Southeastern Conference title game, if the Gators make it.

Spurrier is irate -- but not surprised -- that Dockett will not be punished by the Seminoles.

"Would it surprise me an FSU player did that?" Spurrier told the Orlando Sentinel on Tuesday. "No, it didn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me Bowden won't do anything. It doesn't surprise me at all. That's the way they do business at FSU. It's the way they run the show up there. You can quote me on that one. It doesn't surprise me at all."
