Zook retains two assistants, adds five others

Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- New Florida coach Ron Zook filled seven spots on his staff Thursday, retaining two of Steve Spurrier's assistants and hiring former Gators offensive lineman Joe Wickline and four other new coaches.

Zook kept receivers coach Dwayne Dixon and linebackers coach Jerry Odom. Dixon spent all 12 seasons at Florida with Spurrier, and Odom joined the staff just last year.

The others hired were Larry Fedora (running backs), Red Anderson (defensive line), Mike Woodford (likely defensive backs) and Ed Zaunbrecher (offensive coordinator).

Fedora and Wickline each come from Middle Tennessee State. Woodford comes with Zook from the New Orleans Saints. Zaunbrecher was offensive coordinator at Marshall. Anderson was an assistant at Florida from 1985-94, and returns after seven seasons as an administrator with Gator Boosters, Inc.

The staff of seven gives Zook the maximum number allowed to hit the road for recruiting season, which picks up again Saturday. The Gators will have 21 recruits on campus this weekend.

Zook is still searching for a defensive coordinator.
