Vols' AD says school investigated unrelated '99 claim

Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee athletic director Doug Dickey said Wednesday he had not been made aware of any possible violations in February 1999 and could not comment because of an ongoing investigation into alleged payments to former Vols quarterback Tee Martin.

The Southeastern Conference is investigating new allegations of rules violations involving Martin. The SEC is looking into alleged payments in February 1999 totaling $4,500 from Diane Sanford, then an executive at Aarco Insurance, forwarded to Martin from Mobile (Ala.) Register sports reporter Wayne Rowe.

Dickey did say that athletic officials found no violations after investigating unrelated allegations involving Martin in the fall of 1999.

"What I had in the fall was an allegation that did not relate to these, but I will not elaborate anymore on that," Dickey said Wednesday. "We did not file any self report with the NCAA, so we are, in effect, going about our business."

Martin, who led the Volunteers to the 1998 national championship, is a quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's currently playing for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe.

Dickey said he has not spoken to Martin recently, but added, "We will."
