NORMAN, Okla. -- The season is over for Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, who blew out his right knee Saturday against Alabama.
White, who suffered a season-ending injury to his other knee last year, tore the anterior cruciate ligament as he planted to turn upfield on a keeper late in the first quarter.
"It's tough. It's hard. I don't know what to say to him,'' coach Bob Stoops said after the No. 2 Sooners rallied for a 37-27 victory. "He's a great leader. The players love him, he's a tough guy, and it's a bad break.''
White had thrown a 33-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton earlier in the quarter to give the Sooners a 9-3 lead.
On a second-and-5 play from near midfield, White rolled out and collapsed as he tried to turn upfield.
Last year, he battled through fall workouts with Nate Hybl before Hybl was eventually named the starter.
He replaced Hybl in the Texas game and helped lead the Sooners to victory, then did the same thing a week later against Kansas. That resulted in him getting the starting job.
In his second start, against Nebraska, he tore the ACL in his left leg, again without getting hit.
"I'm so hurt for Jason, but I'm so excited about the season ahead of us,'' Hybl said. "To come from behind means so much to me.''
White won the job this fall. He threw for 126 yards in a 37-0 victory over Tulsa last week. He was 5-of-8 for 55 yards before getting hurt Saturday.
Hybl started 11 of Oklahoma's 13 games last season. He led two second-quarter scoring drives against Alabama, then struggled through the third quarter and the first series in the fourth before directing an 80-yard TD drive.
He had a big third-down completion to keep that drive going. The other pass plays were shovel tosses to Renaldo Works, who took them 23 and 39 yards to set up the touchdown.
"Once the ball started rolling, we had that feeling we were going to get in the end zone,'' Hybl said. "This stadium erupted. It was a like a dream.''
Hybl threw for 2,234 yards a year ago with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
"We don't want Jason to be hurt. But I'll promise you, sure, our team has great confidence in Nate,'' coach Bob Stoops said. "I don't think that'll bother our offense at all.'' |
