HONOLULU -- Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang injured both his knee and the thumb on his throwing hand in Saturday's game and has a 50 percent chance of starting against Alabama this week, coach June Jones said Monday.
Jones was unsure whether Chang would be able to practice this week because of the sprained thumb.
"I think his knee will probably allow him to play this week because he is walking,'' Jones said. "But his thumb is really swollen and that concerns me more than his knee.''
A late hit by Cincinnati linebacker Tyjuan Hagler with 2:39 left sent Chang out of Saturday night's game with an injury to his left knee. His thumb was injured on the same play, Jones said. The Warriors ended the game with a 20-19 come-from-behind victory over the Bearcats.
Before being taken from the field in a wheelchair, Chang completed 23-of-42 passes for 219 yards. An X-ray and an MRI showed no fracture.
"I thought the (Cincinnati) guy was playing hard,'' Jones said. "I thought he could've avoided it, but he was trying to do his job and unfortunately he went low. He was not blocked into it, but he was out of control.''
Chang did not participate in the team's conditioning drills Monday.
School officials listed him as "questionable'' for Saturday's game against No. 14 Alabama.
Chang wasn't sure of his status Monday morning and was seen wearing a large brace on his left knee as he limped to the UH training room for medical treatment.
"We'll see how it goes this week,'' Chang said. |
