GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina coach Steve Logan won't be back next season after going 4-8 in his 11th year.
Logan had more wins than any other coach in school history. His teams were 69-58 and went to five bowl games, winning two, but the Pirates won just four of their last 15 games.
"There's always a lot of factors that go into any decision,'' athletics director Mike Hamrick said Saturday. "The only thing I can say is we reached a mutual agreement that he would resign.''
East Carolina will continue to pay Logan's $200,000 annual salary for the next three years. The payments will be reduced by any income Logan earns during the period.
The announcement came a day after the Pirates were beaten at home by Cincinnati 42-26. ECU finished tied for fifth in Conference USA at 4-4, its worst finish in six years of league play.
After Friday night's loss, Logan said he couldn't control his fate, but that the school would have to write "an awful big check'' to dismiss him.
Logan has an unlisted home telephone number and could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday. Media relations director Craig Wells said he didn't know where Logan was.
Logan came to East Carolina in 1989 as running backs coach and was offensive coordinator for two years before taking over as head coach before the 1992 season. Previously, he was an assistant at Mississippi Oklahoma State, Tulsa, and Colorado.
The Pirates became a dangerous opponent in the 1990s by occasionally knocking off big-name opponents like Miami, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and South Carolina.
His 1999 team went 9-3 and was ranked in both national polls from the fourth week of the season until the final poll. His 1995 team also went 9-3, including a win over Stanford in the Liberty Bowl. |
