Schmidt says it's 'time to move on' from football

Associated Press

PROVO, Utah -- Brigham Young defensive coordinator Ken Schmidt announced his retirement Monday after 21 seasons with the Cougars.

Schmidt, 60, had been the Cougars defensive coordinator since 1991. He also was linebackers coach since joining LaVell Edwards' staff in 1982.

"I've been coaching for nearly 40 years and it's time to move on to the next phase of life,'' said Schmidt, who also coached Ricks College and two Salt Lake City high schools before coming to BYU.

Schmidt said he talked with Cougars coach Gary Crowton on Monday morning and both agreed it was time for retirement. Schmidt said he looked forward to golfing, fishing and seeing more of his family.

"Ken has had some tremendous success as a coach here at BYU,'' Crowton said. "We wish Ken and his family the very best.''
