JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- The Jacksonville sheriff has ordered internal affairs officials to investigate the arrest of Notre Dame linebacker Chad DeBolt because of bruises he suffered when picked up for causing a disturbance at a nightclub. Police arrested DeBolt, 22, after workers at the Ocean Club said he refused to leave early Friday morning. The Notre Dame senior, in town for Wednesday's Toyota Gator Bowl, faces a trespassing charge. DeBolt, 22, of Waterloo, N.Y., was bruised and bloody in his booking photo and at least one witness said he didn't look that way before he was arrested. "I want to know what happened," Sheriff Nat Glover said. "We have people resist over there (in jail) and it's not something that is unusual, but we need to look into this one." Glover said that, so far, investigators have found nothing to indicate that any sheriff's officers acted improperly, The Florida Times-Union reported Sunday. Sheriff's spokesman John Turner declined to make additional comment Sunday. Notre Dame (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) faces No. 17 North Carolina State in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on New Year's Day. Sgt. Bobbi Schlatterer of Jacksonville Beach police, which arrested DeBolt before delivering him to the Duval County Jail, told the newspaper: "He did not look like that when he was arrested, and he did not look like that when he was delivered to the Duval County jail." The jail is run by the sheriff's office. Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham has declined to answer questions about DeBolt's arrest. "I really can't tell you anything about that situation," Willingham said. "There has been an incident, but at this time I'm not able to elaborate any more than that." Notre Dame associate athletics director John Heisler said DeBolt was still in Jacksonville, but wouldn't say what the player's status was with the team. "I don't know that we intend to comment any further," Heisler told The Associated Press on Sunday. DeBolt was released late Friday on his own recognizance. He must return for a Jan. 22 court hearing. DeBolt was asked several times by nightclub management to leave, but he refused, a sheriff's report said. Ocean Club manager John Blackwelder then asked a Jacksonville Beach police officer to remove DeBolt, the report said. The officer told DeBolt several times to leave but the player again refused, so he was arrested, the report said. He was put in a restraint chair when he arrived at the jail because police said he was disruptive. |
