PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers quarterback Ryan Cubit is transferring to Western Michigan, where his father was offensive coordinator from 1997-99.

Cubit won the starting quarterback job as a freshman in 2001, coach Greg Schiano's first season, but started only four games in 2002.

"I'm sorry to see him leave," Schiano said. "I hope his career goes the way he'd like it to. I think anytime you lose a good person and good football player, it's not something you want to do very often."

Bill Cubit, Ryan's father and Rutgers' offensive coordinator, refused to comment on his son's status when reached at his hotel room in New Orleans at the American Football Coaches Association's annual convention Monday.

Ryan Cubit started all 11 games in 2001, throwing for 1,433 yards, the most by a freshman at Rutgers. He also set a school record for interceptions (19) and freshman records for touchdown passes (nine), attempts (268) and completions (120).

Cubit completed 64 of 141 passes with five touchdowns and six interceptions in 2002. Two other quarterbacks, Ted Trump and Ryan Hart, also made starts as Rutgers went 1-11.
