Colorado releases Houston from scholarship

Associated Press

BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado tailback Marcus Houston was released from his scholarship Monday, and will talk to Colorado State about a transfer.

Colorado athletic director Dick Tharp signed Houston's release on Monday, four days after he asked coach Gary Barnett for it.

On Friday, star tailback Chris Brown passed up a final year at Colorado and declared himself eligible for the NFL draft.

Houston was part of a highly touted recruiting class in 2000 that also brought quarterback Craig Ochs to Boulder. Ochs, who had several concussions this season, left during the season after a falling out with Barnett.

Houston ran for 332 yards in three games as a freshman, but missed the rest of the season with a torn hip flexor muscle. He had a torn groin muscle in 2001, and even more injuries this season, limiting him to just 49 yards.
