Despite ranking, Miami still in good shape

ESPN.com

A quick look at what's next for the Top 10 in the BCS standings.

Nebraska (9-0)
Last week: No. 2
(at Kansas, Kansas State, at No. 25 Colorado)

The good news is the Huskers beat Oklahoma. The bad news is they may have to do it again in the Big 12 title game to reach the Rose Bowl presented by AT&T. Of course, first things first -- the rest of the regular season schedule. While Kansas is nothing more than a speed bump on the road to the national championship game, but K-State and Colorado could be tougher. The Wildcats have been mild so far this year, but beating Nebraska could be a season-saver. And Colorado just seems to give Nebraska fits every year.

Oklahoma (7-1)
Last week: No. 1
(Tulsa, No. 17 Texas A&M, at Texas Tech, Oklahoma State)

Wow...Bob Stoops and company should send fruit baskets to the voters in the polls. The fact OU didn't fall very far in the coaches and AP polls kept the Sooners above Miami. So, technically, the Sooners still control their own fate. Win out -- and the schedule isn't that tough -- and a likely rematch with Nebraska looms for the right to go the Rose Bowl.

Miami (6-0)
Last week: No. 4
(Temple, at Boston College, No. 22 Syracuse, No. 10 Washington, at No. 12 Virginia Tech)

OK...before you Miami fans start screaming, remember who is in front of you. Nebraska and Oklahoma either will meet again and knock each other off or lose a game along the way, cancelling the rematch and ensuring a Rose Bowl path for the 'Canes. So, this is still a good spot to be in for Miami. At least, it puts them in total control. Win their remaining five games and they're in. They'll bump up in schedule strength in their final five games -- three ranked teams and a very good BC team. Factor in they'll likely stay No. 1 in both polls and Miami looks good.

Michigan (6-1)
Last week: No. 7
(at Michigan State, Minnesota, at Wisconsin, Ohio State)

Stop looking at this in disbelief. Yes, it says Michigan. Thanks to playing the third toughest schedule in the country -- their rankings, not ours -- the Wolverines are lurking in the shadows. A loss here or there and there possibly could be a Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl.

Texas (7-1)
Last week: No. 6
(at Baylor, Kansas, at No. 17 Texas A&M)

Here sit the Longhorns sticking pins in the OU dolls. One Sooner loss and its the Longhorns in the Big 12 title game against Nebraska and from there, anything can happen. Only the Aggies loom as a possible road block to finishing 10-1 in the regular season.

Stanford (5-1)
Last week: No. 14
(at No. 10 Washington, at Arizona, California, Notre Dame, at San Jose State)

The Cardinal make the biggest jump in the standings after a shocking upset of UCLA. Pull off another big win against No. 10 Washington this week in what should be their final big test, and well, who knows?

Tennessee (5-1)
Last week: No. 9
(at Notre Dame, Memphis, at Kentucky, Vanderbilt, at No. 3 Florida)

Tennessee is still smarting from that last-second loss to Georgia. A win there, and the Vols are in the top of these standings. But even with the loss, if Tennessee wins out -- and that's not a given with No. 3 Florida sitting there on Dec. 1 -- and someone on top slips, the Vols could be back in the BCS title game for the second time in four years.

Florida (6-1)
Last week: No. 11
(Vanderbilt, at No. 20 South Carolina, No. 14 Florida State, No. 7 Tennessee)

Same as Tennessee, only the Gators are wondering how they lost to Auburn. The Gators are in the same situation as the Vols -- win out and hope for someone else to lose and they could in the Rose Bowl.

UCLA (6-1)
Last week: No. 3
(at No. 19 Washington State, No. 9 Oregon, at USC, Arizona State)

Stanford was the start of a make-or-break run for the Bruins. Consider UCLA broken. Saturday's loss to the Cardinal took the Bruins from controlling their own fate to hoping teams in front of them lose.

Oregon (7-1)
Last week: No. 13
(Arizona State, at No. 11 UCLA, Oregon State)

Man, the Pac-10 is a mess. Oregon knocked Washington State from the ranks of the unbeaten -- and the top 15 in the BCS standings -- and put itself back in the mix. It's a longshot, but at least the Ducks are still at the table playing.

Bottom Five: 11. Washington; 12. Washington State; 13. BYU; 14. Purdue; 15. Virginia Tech.

Dropping Out: South Carolina, Maryland.
