There are really just six teams with a chance to play for the national championship in the Rose Bowl. Here's a quick look at what's left for the top-6. Last week: No. 2 (at No. 13 Virginia Tech) Miami's been good enough to beat some NFL teams lately, but this game in Blacksburg is no gimme. The 'Canes have lost five of the last six to Virginia Tech -- including the last three at Tech.
For all intents and purposes, this game is a battle for the Rose Bowl. Yes, the SEC championship game still looms, but if the Gators can handle the Vols in Gainesville -- and they've done it the last seven times -- they should be able to make plans for Pasadena.
The Longhorns are a longshot to reach the Rose Bowl, but it could happen. Of course, first things first -- Texas must knock off Colorado. At worst, if the 'Horns win, they'll likely end up in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Huskers, despite the stunning loss to Colorado, are still one of the nation's best teams. Of course, they now need a lot of help to reach the Rose Bowl, but expect to see Nebraska in a BCS bowl game.
Without playing a game, the Ducks have moved into the Rose Bowl hunt. If they knock off Oregon State in the Civil War Saturday and get a little help, maybe there will be a Pac-10 team in the Rose Bowl after all.
Outside of Florida, Tennessee is in the best position to reach the Rose Bowl. The Vols travel to Gainesville Saturday -- a place they haven't won since 1971 -- and if they can pull off the upset, Tennessee would likely have the best chance of all the one-loss teams to reach the national title game. The Rest: 7. Colorado, 8. Illinois, 9. Oklahoma, 10. Stanford, 11. Maryland, 12. BYU, 13. Washington State, 14. Washington, 15. Georgia. Dropping out: Michigan. |
