Football is the ultimate team sport. It is the only sport in which each player needs each of his teammates on each play, simply to survive. Therefore, there is no such thing as one quarterback defeating another quarterback. However, the 'Huskers will out-duel the Sooners this Saturday afternoon, and Eric Crouch is a big reason why.

In an era of statistical overkill and over-emphasis on individual attainment in football, listen to a paraphrase of a recent chat with Eric on ESPN.com. "Of course there could be a distraction with all the Heisman talk. But I do not think about it. I have the rest of this year and my senior season to play here, and all I want to do is win for my team. I want to play my heart out for our team."

Refreshing?

You bet. But also productive.

Crouch can run like the wind, passes well enough to pose a consistent threat and keep a drive alive. Most of all, he does what Nebraskans love most. He leads winning efforts, with a record of 21-3, 14 in a row, and counting. In the tradition of his coach Turner Gill and the long line of Nebraska QB greats, he does whatever it takes, and he does it consistently, with a lot of help from his large, fast friends.

As usual, what he does will suffice in Norman this Saturday.

There is no question Josh Heupel can play well in big games. Great players make great plays in big games. Heupel has proved this year that he is a great player. There is the temptation to look at the gaudy statistics (68% completion percentage, 11 TD passes, only 4 interceptions and just under 1,900 yards passing in 6 games) and conclude that Heupel is the beneficiary of the fashionable spread offense. Yeah, right. There are three factors that make Heupel standout from the crowd: accuracy, football smarts and poise.

The accuracy isn't just the 68% completion percentage, it's really about where he puts the ball. Oklahoma gets so many explosion plays because Heupel gets the ball to receivers where they can run after the catch. The receivers are usually covered man-to-man, so they get a chance to make a move and get a big play. Ask Kansas State. He'll do the same thing against Nebraska.

Heupel's football smarts can be seen on almost every play. In the spread offense, he is adept at reading when the blitz is coming and from where. According to Nebraska defensive coordinator Craig Bohl, Heupel always checks to the right play and doesn't make a bad decision. Think about it. How often have you seen Heupel make a bonehead throw or turnover? Nebraska won't likely trick Heupel into making bad decisions in this game.

Poise may be Heupel's biggest attribute. He reminds me of Kenny Stabler -- cool and calm. The real Slim Shady. He'll need it Saturday because Nebraska will try to knock him around. K-State tried that early, and Heupel hung in the pocket and made big plays. As a result, K-State gave up on the blitz until the second half. When the Sooners had to hang on to the ball to thwart a K-State comeback, Heupel, without the help of a running game, kept his cool and completed several key passes to get key first downs late in the fourth quarter.

If Oklahoma doesn't win this Saturday, it won't be because of Heupel.
