Well, Chris Weinke has made his case, and it's a pretty good one so far. Weinke, FSU's senior QB, finished the season with a 353-yard, 3 TD effort against then-No. 4 Florida and leads ESPN.com's Heisman Poll with 39 points, including four first place votes. He finished the year with 4,167 yards and 33 TDs and a 61 percent completion percentage. Now he waits as Oklahoma's Josh Heupel -- the other QB in this two-man race -- plays two more games, including a national televised battle with K-State in the Big 12 championship game. Heupel, second with 37 points and four first place votes, has been mortal the last few weeks, including a 248-yard, 1 TD game against Texas Tech. On the year, he has 3,018 and 17 TDs. Purdue's Drew Brees received the last first place vote and is third with 24 points. TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson and Northwestern's Damien Anderson round out the top five. The Heisman Poll features nine ESPN coaches, analysts and writers, and will appear weekly during the season. Panelists are asked to vote for their top five and players are awarded five points for a first-place vote, four for second and so on down the line.
Voters for the Heisman Poll are Lee Corso, Todd Christensen, Bill Curry, Rod Gilmore, Mike Gottfried, Kirk Herbstreit, Mel Kiper, Jr., John Mackovic and Gene Wojciechowski. |
