A breakdown of the nation's best recruiters

By Tom Lemming
Special to ESPN.com

ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Lemming names the best recruiters in the country (in no particular order).

Rodney Garner, Georgia
Probably gets as close to the prospects as any coach I've seen. A hard worker with tremendous contacts.

Bill O'Brien, Georgia Tech
The fastest-rising assistant in the nation. It seems his name pops up everywhere. I haven't gone to any part of the country where a top prospect didn't know who he is.

Dave Roberts, South Carolina
Probably the biggest-name recruiter in the nation. Has been on my top 10 list the past 20 years. The hardest-working recruiter in the country. Shows a great ability to sell his school.

Rob Ianello, Arizona
The first coach John Mackovic kept when he arrived in Tucson. Has helped Arizona create a pipeline to not only Texas but also California. Does a great job of getting close to the prospects and has a tremendous sense of who the top players are.

Al Golden, now at Virginia (formally at Penn State)
His name pops up as one of the top recruiters on my prospect questionnaires more often than just about anybody else. Personable with tremendous people skills and a great evaluator.

Buddy Teevens, Florida
Former head coach at Tulane. Has done a tremendous job of cross-checking national prospects. Has great ties to high school coaches nationally and also does a good job of making prospects feel comfortable during the recruiting process.

Bill Conley, Ohio State
The first coach that new coach Jim Tressel kept on the staff. He's known throughout the nation as the best recruiter in Ohio and one of the best in the state of Florida. Extremely thorough locally.

Greg Mattison, Notre Dame
Has been on this list for several years -- at Texas A&M, Michigan and now Notre Dame. Without him, Notre Dame would be in big trouble. A national cross-checker who has landed more blue-chippers than any other assistant over the past 10 years.

Turner Gill, Nebraska
The Huskers' ace recruiter who does a great job in the home and also as an evaluator. Known throughout the Midlands and Southwest regions as a competitor who's extremely tough to beat head-to-head.

Jim Chaney, Purdue
His reputation is a national one, not only as a recruiter but also as an offensive coordinator and QB coach. Does a better job of discovering prospects early than just about any other coach.
