Monday: Surviving the meat market

By David Carr
Special to ESPN.com

Dear Diary,

So far, my Senior Bowl experience has been terrific. The people down here in Mobile have been awesome. I've never been to this part of the country before -- Kentucky is the closest I've ever been to the South -- and I didn't quite know what to expect. When we arrived at the airport on Sunday, we were met by a group of southern belles -- complete with hoop skirts and bonnets -- which was interesting. We walked into that scene and I wondered who all this was for. The girls bent over and bowed down which surprised me. Then I figured well, it must be for me. Everybody at the Senior Bowl has been great and really hospitable to me and my family.

My agent, Mike Sullivan, and I went over everything that would happen this week before I came out. However, it's one of those situations that you just can't verbalize. We talked about how there would be a zillion people hanging around the lobby at the Adam's Mark Hotel where the teams are staying and at the practices. Sure enough, there are a zillion people in the lobby and at the practices -- I just didn't realize to what extreme the attention would be. He also said the elevators would take forever. And I can assure you that they do.

The first thing on our Monday agenda was the weigh-in. It was such a meat market! I felt like a cow standing in line for the slaughter. It was kind of funny standing in line with the other guys waiting for our turn to be weighed and measured wearing just our shorts and socks. Then you look out at the hundreds of scouts and officials sitting there watching you and writing down the information. It was interesting, to say the least. When I walked out after being weighed and measured, Steve Hale, the Senior Bowl President, asked me if I won, placed or showed. I knew it would be something like that, but not to that extreme. When I was walking out the door I was handed a bunch of informational flyers by teams to fill out. I'm going to go through the envelopes, fill out the info and set up some appointments with teams. I've already had meetings with about a zillion teams. But it's been fun. It's been everything I've ever wanted to happen for me.

As far as the practices and Saturday's game, I have high expectations for myself coming out here. The first day of practice went well. There's a tremendous amount to learn. For the most part, we did well on offense. It's gonna take time to get the timing down with the receivers -- which is something we don't have. Everything will be rushed and we'll have to work extremely hard in practice. I'm just out there to get better.

I think the biggest thing is for me and my receivers knowing where we're going to be. The thing I had at Fresno is we worked really hard in the offseason at getting our timing down and knowing that on a certain route I could throw it a certain way. Today, I'd throw a pass and it would be nowhere near the guy. Once all this talent meshes together, it should be fun.

The South team is working with the Arizona Cardinals staff. Rich Olson, the offensive coordinator, and Geep Chryst, the QB coach, have been great. They really know their stuff. I'll be listening to them the rest of the week. We're basically running the same kind of offense we ran at Fresno, but the terminology is different, which is the biggest adjustment. There are a lot of similar routes, but the way they go about calling plays is totally different than anything I've ever done. That will take some adjustment. We worked some of it out today. I'm glad they don't put in the whole playbook -- just things we can learn in a couple of days.

It's fun being on the field with some of the guys you've watched on Saturdays, as well as them watching you. It's always special when you're working with great athletes. I'm looking forward to working with Rohan Davey and Kurt Kittner again. We worked out this past summer together for a while. I got to meet Alex Brown on Monday, who I've always tried to watch while he was at Florida. He's a crackup, a real piece of work. I admire and respect the games of so many people here.

It's been terrific getting to know all the people who make decisions in the NFL. No matter where I end up being drafted, it'll be fun. I'll be letting you in on more of my week at the Senior Bowl on Thursday, and I'm really looking forward to my in-game diary during Saturday's game.

Later,

DC
