MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Jody Conradt became the first women's
basketball coach to coach 1,000 games Wednesday night, but any
satisfaction at reaching the milestone wasn't noticeable.
Conradt was far more concerned with her players after No. 17
Texas' 72-63 loss to Kansas State.
"I guess it's a lot of games," Conradt said. "We were talking
about that earlier and our players pointed out that I was sick for
one game last year. So it's actually only 999. I guess they're
counting more than we are."
Kristin Rethman hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead
the Wildcats (11-5, 1-4 Big 12 Conference), who snapped a four-game
losing streak after their worst conference start since 1993.
"It feels great," guard Kim Woodlee said. "I was telling
Kristin I think I'm going to sleep. I've been going through this
phase of not sleeping since we've been losing."
Kansas State coach Deb Patterson now has 10 straight victories
over teams in the Top 20.
Andrea Armstrong added 18 points for Kansas State, which kept
Texas (14-5, 2-3) winless in Manhattan since the creation of the
Big 12.
"For us the thing that means the most is we took the floor and
played the game with intensity and with the single-minded purpose
to handle our responsibilities with focus," she said. "That means
more than who you beat. It is a great feeling for us to know we can
compete against a Top-25 caliber team."
Conradt is the first women's coach to reach the 1,000-game mark,
the 21st college coach overall. She still leads all women's coaches
with 760 wins, 643 at Texas.
Conradt's 1,000th game came with one of her former players on
the opposing bench. Kansas State assistant Kamie Etheridge played
for Conradt from 1982-86, earning National Player of the Year
and All-American honors in her senior season.
"I don't know if there is anyone else in the game that our
staff holds as high as Coach Conradt," Patterson said. "She is
one of the best to ever coach in the great game. It's very special
to be able to play against her."
Kansas State led by nine points midway through the first half,
but committed nine turnovers and went 1-for-9 from the field over
the next 10 minutes as the Longhorns took a 28-25 halftime lead.
"There at the first of the game I felt if I coach another
thousand games I'll see something else I have never seen," Conradt
said. "But we weathered that, and then came back in the second
half to have total mental breakdowns."
The Wildcats pulled away with a 10-0 run in the second half,
eight of those points coming from Armstrong. Kim Woodlee hit four
3-pointers after the break, accounting for all of her 12 points.
Woodlee and Rethman combined for nine 3-pointers.
"The execution tonight was the best it's been all season,"
Rethman said. "The screens were great and they were finding us
when we were open. We had good passes tonight also."
Stacy Stephens' 19 points and 12 rebounds led Texas, and Tai
Dillard added 10 points for the Longhorns. Stephens was 7-for-11
from the field in the first half.
Woodlee hit her third 3-pointer of the second half with 7:19 to
to, giving Kansas State its biggest lead at 56-41.
Alisha Sare hit two 3-pointers and Meg Brown made a layup as
Texas kept within eight, but Woodlee hit her fourth 3-pointer with
1:40 left to seal Kansas State's win.
The Longhorns lost their third straight conference road game.
