Southwest Missouri State steals conference lead

RECAP | BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Jackie Stiles scored 49 points, the most by a woman in Division I this season, to lead No. 14 Southwest Missouri State to a 90-81 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday.

Stiles, the leading scorer in the country, is averaging more than 30 points a game. She has had six of the top-10 point totals in the nation this season.

She was 17 or 23 from the field, including five of six from the 3-point line. She made 10 of 12 free throws.

Stiles is fewer than 300 points from breaking the career point total record of 3,122 set by Patricia Haskins (1989) at Mississippi Valley State.

The win gives Southwest Missouri (13-3, 7-1) the lead in the Missouri Valley, a half game ahead of Northern Iowa (11-4, 6-1).

The Lady Bears built a 25-point second-half lead thanks to 14 points from Stiles. But the margin evaporated after Northern Iowa went on a 10-0 run to draw to 67-52 with 7:57 left. Northern Iowa trailed 68-55 before Stiles scored 11 of Southwest Missouri's final 22 points.

Erica Vincete had 11 points and 15 assists and Tara Mitchem added 14 points for Southwest Missouri.

Northern Iowa had five players in double figures. Abbi Schutte had 21 point, Kary Dawson added 17, Amy Swisher 13, Nikki Spettel 12 and Katie Miller 10.
