Johnson, Cartwell score 16 apiece

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Shondra Johnson and LaNisha Cartwell each scored 16 points as Alabama beat Mississippi State 65-62 Sunday, the 21st-ranked Lady Bulldogs' third straight loss.

Mississippi State (10-7, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) has defeated Alabama (14-4, 2-3) only four times in 25 years.

LaToya Thomas, who is averaging 23.9 points, scored 23 points for Mississippi State.

Alabama, which was opening a three-game road trip, shot 45.8 percent in the second half and outscored Mississippi State 26-16 in the paint. Mississippi State led 32-31 at halftime.

Keisha Stringfellow and Dana Benemon scored 10 points each for the Lady Bulldogs, who were coming off their most lopsided loss of the season -- 72-45 at Arkansas on Thursday.

Beth Vice scored 10 for Alabama.
