Cyclones win sixth straight

RECAP | BOX SCORE

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly's plan was to not let North Carolina State's Carisse Moody beat his seventh-ranked Cyclones.

It worked in more ways than one.

Tracy Gahan had 21 points, and Angie Welle had 17 points and 12 rebounds as Iowa State won its sixth straight, 71-64 over North Carolina State (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) on Sunday.

Moody scored 13 points, but had to fight through double and triple teams. She scored nine during 6:28 span in the second half as the Wolfpack went up 46-45, but did not score in the final 10 minutes after Fennelly had Erica Haugen shadow her every move.

"We just felt like we had to gamble, especially on the road, and chase their best players," Fennelly said. "I really thought she had to work for every point she got."

Iowa State's collapsing defense forced N.C. State (11-7) to the perimeter.

N.C. State averaged six 3-point attempts in its first 16 games, but put up 25 -- one short of the school record -- against Iowa State. The Wolfpack made just five.

Iowa State (15-1), which leads the nation in 3-pointers made at nine per game, hit nine of 18 from long range. Lindsey Wilson and Gahan made three each.

"We can compete with teams, but we have to do what our strength is," said Yow, whose team has lost three in row in a span of seven days. "We have to remember what our strengths are and not pretend we're something else. I'm sure that's what they wanted us to do, but I just didn't think we'd do it."

Iowa State's Megan Taylor added 14 points, including 10 in the final six minutes.

After the two teams traded baskets on 11 consecutive trips, Taylor hit a 3-pointer to put the Cyclones up 58-55 with six minutes left. That started a 7-0 run, but the Wolfpack pulled within 65-64 on a 3-pointer by Amy Simpson with 2:10 left.

Taylor responded 28 seconds later with a long 3-pointer and added two free throws as Iowa State scored the final six points.

"It think it (Taylor's first 3) was huge, especially because they made a little run to get back into the game," said Wilson, who had 16 points and 11 assists. "They had the momentum and finally Megan steps up and hits a shot, and I think maybe that put a little doubt back in their minds."

Iowa State shot 57 percent while holding N.C. State to 37 percent. The Cyclones made 14 of 21 shots in the second half.

N.C. State's Tynesha Lewis had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, but made just 4 of 14 shots.
