LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Tennessee center Michelle Snow is doing
her part to make up for the loss of star teammate Tamika Catchings.
| | | Ashley Robinson scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Vols to a 40-13 advantage on the defensive boards. |
Snow had 21 points and 11 rebounds as the No. 2 Lady Vols handed
Kentucky its most-lopsided loss in school history, a 110-38 rout
Sunday.
"We've all got to pitch in and try to do what we can to match
Tamika's stats," said Snow, a 6-foot-5 junior. "I was able to put
up some numbers today, but we've all got to step up."
Catchings was averaging nearly 16 points and nine rebounds
before tearing a knee ligament last week, ending her college
career.
Snow, who came into the game averaging 10.5 points and 7.2
rebounds, hit 8-of-9 shots and blocked two shots. The Lady Vols
(18-1, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) won their seventh straight game
and second since Catchings was injured.
"The one thing I've asked Michelle to do is stop analyzing and
thinking too much and just play with more energy and aggression on
the court," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. "I think she's
responded well with taking that mindset into games."
Kentucky's previous worst loss also came against Tennessee,
107-53 in 1976.
Stephanie Stoglin hit only five of 19 shots and scored 14 points
for Kentucky (4-13, 0-6). The Wildcats lost their sixth in a row
and scored a season low.
The Wildcats shot a dismal 22.7 percent (15-of-66) and got
outrebounded 63-29. They also committed 26 turnovers, leading to 34
points, and their bench was outscored by Tennessee's reserves 57-4.
"I hope we learned something from this," Kentucky coach
Bernadette Mattox said. "Obviously, they're a whole lot deeper
than we are. They can go 12 or 13 people, and that's why they're
ranked No. 2 in the country.
"We were just outmanned today. They shot well, they executed,
they rebounded ... they did everything they were supposed to do."
Tennessee wasted no time showing just how explosive it can be
without Catchings. The Lady Vols scored the first 11 points of the
game and built a 34-6 lead with 8:20 remaining in the first half.
"We talked about how important it is for this team to establish
a consistent personality and play with an attitude," Summitt said.
"Our starters have gotten us off to some good starts and did so
again today.
"And we really wanted to challenge our bench people because we
felt that would be a place that we would have a distinct advantage.
The quick start, probably more than anything, helped our bench come
in and play pretty relaxed for the most part."
An 8-2 run pulled Kentucky within 36-14. A 12-1 burst gave the
Lady Vols a 48-15 lead with 3:25 remaining in the first half.
Tennessee closed out the half with an 11-2 run for a 59-20
halftime lead. The Lady Vols made nearly as many shots (25) as the
Wildcats attempted (30).
"They're very athletic and very talented," said Kentucky
forward LaTonya McDole, who came into the game averaging 13.5
points but finished with only five. "Mentally, I think we were
pumped up and ready to play them. But I don't think we executed or
ever got into a flow where we were playing both offense and defense
at the same time."
Tennessee led 68-25 three minutes into the second half. A 15-0
run increased the margin to 83-25 with 11:47 remaining.
LaToya Davis' 3-pointer gave the Tennessee a 100-33 lead with
4:31 to play. Courtney McDaniel made Tennessee's last basket with
six seconds remaining as the Lady Vols fell one point short of a
season-high point total.
Davis had 14 points, Kara Lawson 12 and Tasha Butts 10 for the
Lady Vols. Gwen Jackson also had 11 rebounds and Ashley Robinson
added nine as Tennessee finished with a 40-13 rebounding margin at
the defensive end.
