Sutton-Brown handled first half, Cunningham the second

RECAP | BOX SCORE

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Tammy Sutton-Brown paced No. 14 Rutgers in the first half, then Davalyn Cunningham took over in the final 20 minutes as the Scarlet Knights beat St. John's 77-43 Tuesday night.

Sutton-Brown scored 14 of her 15 points as Rutgers (12-5, 5-2 Big East) rolled to 33-19 lead at the break. Cunningham made seven of 10 shots from the floor and had all 17 of her points in the second half.

Cunningham did all her damage inside, scoring on layups or putbacks of offensive rebounds. Sutton-Brown dominated the inside in the first half in the same way, then was content to feed off to her teammates after intermission.

Pressure defense by Rutgers forced 16 first-half turnovers by St. John's (5-12, 0-6) and 28 overall.

Reserve Dawn McCulloch added 11 points for Rutgers. Tasha Pointer had 10 assists and now holds the school career record with 721, breaking the mark of 718 by Janet Malouf (1985-89).

Rasheedah Brown had 13 points, and Latasha Thompson added 10 for the Red Storm.
