Hoffman's double-double gets USC past Oregon

RECAP | BOX SCORE

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Ebony Hoffman recorded the first double-double of her career to help Southern California pull off its second upset in a week.

Hoffman scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Trojans beat No. 20 Oregon 55-53 Thursday night.

USC beat then-No. 22 Arizona 81-67 last Thursday, but followed with a loss to Arizona State on Saturday.

"I don't know why," coach Chris Gobrecht said. "We get up for the (Pacific-10 Conference) leaders and then struggle against everybody else."

Thursday, the Trojans didn't struggle down the stretch. With 42 seconds left, Hoffman hit a hook shot over the arms of Oregon center Jenny Mowe to give the Trojans a 54-53 lead.

When Oregon's Lindsey Dion missed a jump shot at the other end, Hoffman was fouled pulling down the rebound, and made one of two free throws to give the Trojans a 55-53 lead with 13 seconds left.

The Ducks had a chance to tie, but Dion missed a pair of jumpers and, with two seconds remaining, Hoffman stole the ball from Kourtney Shreve.

"I'm very proud of the way we stayed in the game," Gobrecht said. "We just hung in there."

Tashara Carter scored 12 points for USC, which beat Oregon for the third straight time and second straight at McArthur Court.

Brianne Meharry led the Ducks with 12 points. Dion added 10.
