Mazzante leads Penn State with 28

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Kelly Mazzante scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Penn State (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) to a 97-49 victory over Michigan State on Sunday.

Rashana Barnes and Lisa Shepherd each scored 15 points for the Lady Lions (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten), who started with a 12-0 run and held the Spartans scoreless for the first five minutes.

Michigan State (8-10, 2-5) shot just 26 percent in the first half. Mazzante scored 18 in the first half, including four 3-pointers, to help the Lions take a 45-18 halftime lead. Penn State was ahead by as much as 95-46 with 1:08 left.

For Penn State, Katrena Carr scored 12, Jessica Brungo had 11 and Maren Walseth scored 10.

Julie Pagel led the Spartans with 15 points, all in the second half. Abby Salscheider scored 12 and Vnemina Reese added 11.

The Spartans' point total at halftime was the second lowest of the season -- they scored 15 points in the first half Jan. 18 at Purdue. Point guard Ashley Luke did not start because of a broken finger.
