Vols dominate inside to beat Old Dominion

RECAP | BOX SCORE

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Lady Vols turned a decisive edge in offensive rebounding into their fifth straight victory against Old Dominion.

Third-ranked Tennessee outrebounded the Lady Monarchs 25-5 on the offensive boards and 50-25 overall on their way to an 87-70 victory Sunday.

"I told our basketball team, 'When you go on the road, you've got to bring great intensity,"' Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. "Obviously, Old Dominion kept coming at us. We managed to make some runs and get the ball inside."

The Lady Vols outrebounded the Lady Monarchs 29-15 in the first half.

"I was really surprised when I looked at that at halftime," Summitt said. "We are capable of being a dominating rebounding team. We don't always get consistent numbers there."

Old Dominion coach Wendy Larry said her team competed hard at times but couldn't string points together when it counted.

"We have to get people on the offensive glass," Larry said. "That was one of our goals: to limit Tennessee's putbacks. That was our downfall."

Okeisha Howard said Old Dominion needs to make rebounding a top priority.

"As long as they're getting the second shots and we're not, it's tough," said Howard, who scored 13 points and had a game-leading four steals.

The Lady Vols (21-1) opened the second half with a 23-8 run -- including nine points by Gwen Jackson -- to take a 66-39 lead.

Old Dominion (10-6) couldn't get closer than 17 points after that.

Jackson finished with 23 points and had eight rebounds.

Michelle Snow also had eight rebounds for Tennessee and added 19 points. Kara Lawson had 13 points.

Hamchetou Maiga led Old Dominion with 17 points, including 15 in the first half, before she fouled out late in the second half.

Sharron Francis added 11 points.

In the first half, Tennessee went on a 9-0 run to lead 40-21 with less than three minutes to go. Old Dominion answered with a 10-1 run to cut the lead to 10 points just before the halftime break.

The last time Old Dominion beat Tennessee was in January 1997, 83-72. About three months later, the Lady Vols defeated Old Dominion 68-59 in the national championship and they haven't lost since to the Lady Monarchs.

Last season, the Lady Monarchs went to Knoxville and suffered the worst loss in their history, 113-55.

Sunday's game came in the middle of a tough stretch for Old Dominion, which is playing three of last season's Final Four teams in 13 days. The Lady Monarchs lost at then-No. 1 Connecticut 80-51 on Jan. 18. No. 14 Rutgers visits Old Dominion on Wednesday.
