Strickland,Warley Maryland's 1-2 punch

RECAP | BOX SCORE

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Marche Strickland scored 27 points, Deedee Warley had 16 of her 18 points in the second half and Maryland's inside game wore down No. 17 Clemson for a 68-62 victory Thursday night.

Warley, a 6-foot-2 junior, did about anything she wanted down low after halftime and Maryland (15-6, 6-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved into a second-place tie with its fifth straight victory and first season sweep of Clemson in four years.

The Tigers (15-6, 6-4) rallied from double-digit margins in each half, but could not stop Warley down the stretch as they lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Strickland scored 17 points in the first half as Maryland ran to a 30-18 lead. In the second half, after Clemson had an 11-point margin to 59-57, Strickland nailed a 3-pointer with 1:51 to go.

Clemson could not catch up.

Chrissy Floyd led the Tigers with 18 points, but had just three in the second half.

The game changed for good when Warley got going. Her fifth basket of the half put Maryland ahead 47-36. When Clemson tied the game at 47-all, Warley converted three more inside shots to push the lead to 57-51.

After Strickland's last 3-pointer, Floyd hit one of two free throws awarded on Maryland coach Chris Weller's technical foul. But Krystal Scott missed a driving basket and had a second attempt at tying go in and out with about 46 seconds to go.

Strickland, who was 6-for-6 from the field in the first half, closed things out with six free throws.

Floyd and Clemson had their worst game of the season this past Sunday at Duke. Floyd scored seven points, her only single-digit game this year. And she looked sluggish at the start of this one, hitting only one of her five attempts as Maryland led 30-18 with 6:13 left before halftime.

That's when Floyd, the ACC's third-leading scorer, got hot. She hit two 3-pointers, made a pair of free throws and hit two driving baskets as Clemson closed the half with a 14-0 run.

Scott's drive with 3.2 seconds to go put the Tigers ahead 32-30.

Clemson was without starting forward Marci Glenney, who injured the muscle that attaches to her right Achilles' tendon.
