Taylor becomes Iowa State's all-time leading rebounder

RECAP | BOX SCORE

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Senior Day left Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly a wreck, and he wasn't the one who had to give a speech.

Iowa State (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP) sent its four seniors out as winners on Saturday, beating Texas A&M 82-61 in the Cyclones' final regular-season home game.

Angie Welle led with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and senior Megan Taylor scored 15 while becoming Iowa State's career rebounding leader.

"I was shaking so bad today I cut myself shaving," Fennelly said. "I couldn't tie my tie. This one was as hard for me as I've ever had."

Lindsey Wilson added 13 points for Iowa State (22-4, 12-3 Big 12), which could be chosen as a site for first- and second-round games in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cyclones' other senior starter, Erica Haugen, had eight points and a season-high nine assists.

Taylor grabbed seven rebounds to increase her career total 924, breaking the record of 921 set by Tonya Burns from 1981-85. Mention of the record drew a shrug from Taylor, who needs 34 points to become the school's career scoring leader.

"Something to write on my resume, I guess. It probably won't be for long," said Taylor, aware that Welle, a junior, probably will break it next season.

Texas A&M (12-14, 2-13) threw up some wild shots against Iowa State's 2-3 zone, few of which went in, and lost for the ninth straight time. Jaynetta Saunders scored 29 for the Aggies, who shot only 37 percent and were outrebounded 52-31. No one else scored more than eight points.

Saunders became A&M's single-season scoring leader with 589 points.

"Rebounding and transition killed us," Texas A&M coach Peggie Gillom said. "We weren't rebounding and we weren't getting back in transition."

Fennelly had all four seniors in the game at the end and took them out one by one. Taylor was the last to go, leaving with 2:51 to play, and received the loudest ovation.

Taylor is a four-year starter and Iowa State has gone 99-26 during her career, with three NCAA tournament appearances, including one trip to the final eight and another to the round of 16.

The seniors addressed the crowd of 12,931 afterward, Haugen spicing her talk with several one-liners.

"I thought she was running for office," Fennelly said. "She got my vote."

Texas A&M matched Iowa State shot-for-shot early and it was 23-23 when Saunders hit a 3-pointer with 8:46 left in the first half.

Iowa State then got its transition going and left the Aggies behind. Five different players scored in a 20-2 run that put Iowa State ahead 43-25.

"We were in the game and the next thing I knew, we were down 15 just that quick," Gillom said, snapping her fingers. "Gosh, when they're draining 3s, that's their game and they do it perfectly."

Taylor hit a driving shot and a 3-pointer in an 11-2 run early in the second half that stretched the lead to 57-33. Later she drove through the lane and flicked in a left-handed runner that drew a roar from the crowd.

That came during a 7-0 run that gave the Cyclones their biggest lead, 73-47.
