GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) Michigan made it three in a row over
Penn State (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP), and the latest win moved the Wolverines into the
semifinals of the Big Ten Conference tournament.
Raina Goodlow had 17 points and 14 rebounds as Michigan beat the
Lady Lions 66-60 on Friday.
"It was a huge win for us," Michigan coach Sue Guevara said.
"I was very, very pleased to see Raina Goodlow and Stephanie Gandy
step up for us today."
Last Sunday, Michigan (18-10) rallied from 16 points down to
beat Penn State (19-9) 75-74 in the final seconds. The Wolverines
also won the first meeting earlier in the season.
Gandy chipped in with 10 of her 12 points in the second half as
the Wolverines held off the Lady Lions.
"Our defense really let us down," Penn State coach Rene
Portland said. "We let some people get away."
Michigan, seeded fifth, trailed by two points at halftime but
went ahead 26-24 on a basket by LeeAnn Bies just over a minute into
the period. The Wolverines never trailed again.
Penn State, seeded fourth, never was out of the game but each
time it appeared to get some momentum, Michigan muscled down a
rebound or forced a turnover.
Michigan's defense limited Big Ten scoring leader Kelly Mazzante
to 12 points. She averaged 18.8 during the regular season.
Rashana Barnes led the Lady Lions' scoring attack with 18 points
and was their top rebounder, with 11.
For the Wolverines, Thorius had 15 points and nine assists and
Bies scored 10 points.
