Bulldogs force 24 turnovers

RECAP | BOX SCORE

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Georgia (No. 5 ESPN/USA Today, No. 6 AP) had trouble getting its shots to fall early Friday night, so the Bulldogs played a game of takeaway with Mississippi.

The Bulldogs forced 24 turnovers and turned those into 32 points in beating Mississippi 80-61 in the second round of Southeastern Conference tournament. Coco Miller scored 17 points and Kelly Miller added 14, but they started slowly, hitting a combined two of their first 10 shots.

"We just weren't hitting them," Coco Miller said. "Defensively, we stuck with it, hung in there. Our offense eventually came to us."

Georgia wound up shooting 47 percent, including 53 percent (17-of-32) in the second half. The third-seeded Bulldogs (24-5) will play seventh-seeded Arkansas, which upset No. 10 Florida 78-69, Saturday night in the semifinals. No. 1 Tennessee plays 15th-ranked Vanderbilt in the other semifinal.

Eleventh-seeded Mississippi (17-11) led 18-15 on a bucket by TaShondrea Moton with 11:52 left when Christi Thomas keyed a 9-0 spurt with six points for a 24-18 lead with 8:35 to go in the first half.

Georgia struggled early with the Miller sisters having trouble sinking shots, and Ole Miss pulled within 26-25 at the 4:00 mark. Then the Millers got going, and the Lady Rebels had the most trouble holding onto the ball.

The Millers scored a combined 12 points as Georgia finished out the half with a 14-2 run and led 39-27 at halftime. Coco Miller, who missed her first five shots, finally scored with 3:34 left and had eight points by the end of the half, and her sister added a 3-pointer.

Ole Miss coach Ron Aldy said his players ran into trouble then and looked like they weren't sure whether they could do the job on several turnovers. The Lady Rebels didn't even get a shot off before losing the ball a few times, and Georgia stretched its lead.

"Then it looked like it just kind of shot down a little bit of the confidence we had to that point," Aldy said.

The Lady Bulldogs built that lead to as much as 24 points twice, the last at 2:47 on a bucket by Thomas at 78-54. The most exciting moment came when coach Andy Landers was called for a technical with 5:10 left.

Deana Nolan also had 14, Tawana McDonald added 12 points and Thomas finished with 10 for Georgia.

Kirk and Chandra Dorsey each had 12 for Ole Miss, and Becky Myatt added 10. The Lady Rebels shot 16-of-50 for 32 percent.
