On Nov. 9, 2001, Connecticut beat Fairfield 93-50 to open the 2001-02 season. Little did anyone know that the Huskies would go on to win 70 consecutive games, setting an NCAA Division I women's record and picking up the program's third NCAA title along the way.
The streak finally came to an end Tuesday as Villanova upset top-ranked UConn 52-48 in the Big East tournament championship game. A look back at some of the noteworthy numbers produced by the streak: 0: Halftime deficit? Never heard of it. The Huskies never trailed at the break during the 70-game streak. 1: Connecticut won one national championship in the streak, beating Oklahoma 82-70 for the 2002 title. 3: The Huskies went 3-0 against archrival Tennessee -- an 86-72 regular-season win on Jan. 5, 2002, a 79-56 rout in last season's Final Four and a one-point overtime win last January. 5: The Huskies topped the 100-point mark five times, including four games in 2001-02. 6: UConn won every game by double-digits, except for six outings. The Huskies beat Hawaii by seven points, Tennessee by one point (in overtime), Rutgers and Seton Hall by five points each and Boston College by eight points. The Huskies' lone single-digit win of the 2001-02 season was a nine-point victory against Virginia Tech. 9: The Huskies won nine games by at least 50 points over the past two seasons. 16.2: Diana Taurasi scored 1,070 points and averaged 16.2 points per game during the streak. 19: UConn downed 19 ranked opponents during the streak. 23: The streak included 23 wins by 40 or more points. 29.9: All those double-digit wins translated into a 29.9-point average margin of victory. 31: The Huskies won 31 games by 30 or more points. 32: UConn was perfect at home during the streak, going 14-0 this season and 18-0 in 2001-02. 35.4 UConn set the NCAA single-season record for margin of victory in 2001-02. 48: Diana Taurasi shot 48 percent (384-for-807) from the field over the past 70 games. 49: UConn won 49 games by at least 20 points -- including 32 of the Huskies' 39 games in the 2001-02 season. 51: The streak included 51 consecutive victories over Big East conference opponents. 69: The Huskies dismantled Pitt 112-43 for the biggest win of the streak. The 69-point victory came 15 games into 2001-02. 70: The Huskies beat Virginia Tech in the Big East tournament semifinals by 17 points to push the streak to 70 games.
