Bennett brought in to replace Izard

Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kathi Bennett, whose father, Dick Bennett, coached Wisconsin's men into the NCAA Tournament's Final Four, was hired Tuesday as women's basketball coach at Indiana.

Bennett, 37, replaces Jim Izard, who was fired March 6 after the Hoosiers (10-18) were beaten in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

Bennett was 51-61 in four seasons at Evansville, rebuilding a downtrodden program into a winner. Evansville was a combined 9-43 her first two seasons, then went 19-11 and won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament in 1999. This year's team was 23-7 and placed second in the league.

Before coming to Evansville, Bennett coached seven seasons at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, winning the Division III national title in 1996.
