Tech still looking for Barmore's successor

ESPN.com news services

RUSTON, La. -- Kim Mulkey-Robertson, the top assistant at Louisiana Tech, has turned the opportunity to be Leon Barmore's successor at Tech and instead will be named the new head women's basketball coach at Baylor University.

Mulkey-Robertson played on the 1984 U.S. gold medal women's team at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Tech offered Mulkey-Robertson, who was unanimously recommended by the athletics council, a deal worth $300,000 annually, with a base salary of $105,000 per year.

Mulkey-Robertson, 37, was offered the job last week before the Lady Techsters left to play in the NCAA tournament's Midwest Regional. She decided not to make a decision while the Techsters were still playing and Barmore was finishing out his career.

Barmore retired at the end of Tech's season after 19 years as Tech's coach and a career record of 522-77.

Mulkey-Robertson, who visited Baylor on Wednesday and returned to Ruston on Thursday, will replace Sonja Hogg, who retired on Feb. 21. Hogg was the Lady Techsters' first coach.

According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, Baylor offered Clemson coach Jim Davis a five-year deal worth $200,000 per year last week, but Davis turned them down last Friday. Baylor also interviewed Arkansas head coach Gary Blair, a one-time Tech assistant under Hogg and then Barmore from 1980-85.

Before her marriage, Kim Mulkey, from Hammond, La., was a four-year Louisiana Tech starter from 1980 to 1984 and led the Techsters to a 130-6 record with two national championships and four Final Four appearances. She was also a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, which captured a gold medal in Los Angeles.

She has been a Tech assistant coach for the past 15 years, including the last four as associate head coach. Mulkey-Robertson's duties include coaching the guards and setting the defense. She also serves as recruiting coordinator.

Women's Basketball Journal has ranked Mulkey-Robertson as one of the top four assistant coaches in the country.
