| | RESTON, Va. -- Texas senior Edwina Brown has been named the winner of the Margaret Wade Trophy, which is awarded annually to the women's college basketball national player of the year.

Brown, a 5-foot-10 guard-forward who was named to the 10-member Kodak All-American team a week ago, led the Longhorns in scoring (21.2 points), rebounding (8.4), assists (6.0) and steals (2.9) this season, and finished the regular season ranked No. 7 nationally in scoring.
Brown also was selected to the All-Big 12 first team for the second consecutive year, and was named the Big 12 tournament MVP after averaging 22.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists and setting 13 tournament records. She also notched 10 double-doubles and one triple-double, and scored at least 10 points in 33 of 34 games.
Brown, the only Texas player in history to lead her team in four statistical categories for two straight years, is just the third Texas player in history to receive the Wade Trophy. Clarissa Davis earned the same honor in 1988-89 as a senior, and guard Kamie Ethridge received it during her senior season in 1985-86.
"This is a great honor, and I was stunned to hear that I was this year's recipient," Brown said. "This has been an unbelievable two weeks for me. I know how special the Wade Trophy is and how the award takes into account the total person, on and off the court.
"The Wade Trophy sits in the main entrance of Bellmont Hall (the UT Athletics building) in our trophy case, and I walk by it every day. To know that I'm getting the same national award as Clarissa and Kamie is a great surprise and a great honor."
Earlier in March, Brown also received first-team All-America honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association; was the sixth-leading vote-getter for The Associated Press All-America honors, earning second-team honors; and was a first-team All-America pick by the Women's Basketball Journal and Women's Basketball News Service.
A sport management major, Brown also has been selected to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll twice. As a four-year member in UT's Neighborhood Longhorn program (the student community service group), she has volunteered her time at numerous benefits and walk-a-thons for charity, and has assisted with the annual Neighborhood Longhorns picnics and carnivals for disadvantaged youth in Austin.
"The Wade Trophy encompasses much more than basketball performance, and that's what makes it a special, special honor," Texas coach Jody Conradt said. "Edwina has demonstrated strong academic performance and also has committed lots of personal time to performing community service throughout her four years at Texas. She is a great role model as a student-athletes."
The award, named for women's basketball coaching legend and Naismith Hall of Famer Margaret Wade, is given to the Kodak All-American who best exemplifies athletic excellence, academic performance and outstanding community service. The award was announced Thursday by Mary Ann Borysowicz, Executive Director of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) who present the award in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Pupule Sports.
Representatives of the Wade Trophy will present Brown with her award at the annual Texas Women's Athletics banquet on April 25. | |
