Caren Horstmeyer, Santa Clara's all-time winningest women's basketball coach, has resigned her post with the Broncos to accept the position as head women's basketball coach at Cal.

Horstmeyer, a four-year letterwinner at Santa Clara from 1980 to 1984, replaces Marianne Stanley, who resigned in mid-March after four seasons in Berkeley. Stanley recently was named as an assistant coach for the L.A. Sparks of the WNBA.

Since taking over at Santa Clara 12 years ago, Horstmeyer guided her alma mater to a 221-124 (.641) record, seven postseason appearances, six West Coast Conference championships, six 20-win seasons, the 1991 WNIT Championship and, during the 1998-99 season, the program's first-ever national ranking.

At the end of the end of her collegiate career, Horstmeyer held school records for most points in a game (32), season (452) and career (1,496); most career assists (220); most steals in a season (58) and career (592); most field goals made in a season (189) and career (592); most field-goal attempts in a game (29), season (452) and career (1,477), most free throws in a season (114); most free-throw attempts in a season (170) and most games played (107).
