Duke freshman sensation injured

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke freshman sensation Alana Beard suffered a dislocated left thumb in Thursday night's win over North Carolina State and will be sidelined three to four weeks.

Beard dislocated the thumb on a steal attempt with eight seconds left in the first half. She was taken to Duke Hospital at halftime, where she had surgery to reduce the dislocation.

The 5-11 guard became the first freshman to win Atlantic Coast Conference player and rookie of the week at the same time after averaging 28.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals in leading Duke to three conference wins.

Beard is averaging 16.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 steals in 18 games this season.

Fifth-ranked Duke improved to 17-1 overall and 5-1 in the ACC with Thursday's 62-59 victory over North Carolina State.
